Distinguished Guests,

It is a great pleasure for me to join you at the opening ceremony of the exhibition titled "Tolerance, Understanding, and Coexistence."

Everyday I pass by the beautiful Oman Embassy on my way to and from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The exotic exterior and elaborate design of the building evoke memories of childhood when I read "The Adventures of Sinbad" and indulged in flights of fancy.

The building itself is a small Arab palace within Korea and a gallery that exhibits the time-honored tradition and advanced culture of Oman, contributing to making the peoples of the Republic of Korean and the Sultanate of Oman become closer both emotionally and culturally.

Like the Omani Embassy building, this exhibition will serve as a great venue for enhancing mutual understanding between the peoples of the Republic of Korea and the Sultanate of Oman.

□ Ladies and gentlemen,

This year is very meaningful to our two countries as it marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties. For the past four decades, we have built strong ties as major cooperative partners in the field of energy and as close friends in the international community.

We reconfirmed our strong friendship when Oman provided full support in the rescue operation of the Korean people taken hostage by Somali pirates in 2011, the so-called "Operation Dawn of Gulf of Aden."

Now, the two countries are at a turning point as they are working together to expand the scope of bilateral cooperation to cover healthcare, renewable energy sources, public safety as well as energy and construction.

I strongly believe that our two nations will continue to be the best of friends for another forty years and beyond.


□ Ladies and gentlemen,

Oman is blessed with a beautiful natural environment such as long, white beaches and green mountains that cannot be found in any other Gulf nations.

As it is a maritime logistics hub that links the sea routes between Eastern Africa, the Gulf Peninsula, Persia, and India, Oman has had vibrant human and cultural exchanges with its neighbouring countries since long before, nurturing its tradition of tolerance, understanding and coexistence.

Also, as a Muslim nation, Oman has used the Islamic values of mercy, peace and tolerance to integrate different tribal, religious, ethnic communities into its society.

These values are of utmost importance in this highly inter-connected world of today where people, goods and ideas move freely beyond borders. This exhibition will be an opportunity to showcase such universal values embedded in the Omani Islamic culture.

In closing, let me convey my gratitude to the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs of the Sultanate of Oman and the Omani Embassy in Seoul for their contribution in promoting cultural exchanges and mutual understanding between our two countries.

저는 매일 외교부로 출퇴근시 아름다운 주한오만대사관 앞을 지나가는데, 대사관의 이국적인 외관과 정교한 디자인을 보면 「신밧드의 모험」을 읽으면서 상상의 나래를 펼쳤던 유년시절 기억이 떠오르곤 합니다.

이 대사관 건물 자체가 한국에 있는 작은 아랍 궁전이자 오만의 유구한 전통과 우수한 문화를 보여주는 갤러리로서, 양국 국민 간 문화적, 정서적으로 더욱 가까워질 수 있도록 기여하고 있다고 생각합니다.

금번 전시회도 대사관 건물처럼 양국 국민간 상호이해를 제고할 수 있는 귀중한 행사가 될 것입니다.


 귀빈 여러분,

금년은 양국 수교 40주년을 맞이하는 뜻깊은 해입니다. 지난 40년간 양국은 에너지 분야의 긴밀한 협력 파트너로서, 그리고 국제무대에서 우호국으로서 협력 관계를 구축해왔습니다.


우리는 이미 2011년 소말리아 해적에게 피랍된 우리 국민들의 구출 작전(“아덴만의 여명” 작전) 수행시 오만의 전면적인 지원을 통해 양국의 우정을 재확인할 수 있었습니다.

이제 양국은 협력 범위를 에너지 및 건설 뿐만 아니라 보건, 신재생에너지, 치안 등 전방위로 확대해 나가려고 하는 전환기에 있습니다.

저는 양국이 향후 40년 또는 그 이후에도 계속 가장 가까운 우방일 것이라고 확신합니다.


 귀빈 여러분,


오만은 아름다운 해변과 다른 걸프국가에서는 보기 어려운 녹색 산지 등 천혜의 자연환경을 지닌 국가입니다.

오만은 동아프리카와 걸프반도, 페르시아 및 인도를 잇는 해양 물류 허브로서, 일찍부터 주변국들과 활발히 인적ㆍ문화적 교류를 해오면서 관용, 이해, 공존의 전통을 배양했습니다.

더욱이 오만은 무슬림 국가로서 자비와 평화 및 관용이라는 이슬람 가치를 활용해 여러 부족․종교․종족 커뮤니티를 사회에 통합시켜왔습니다.

사람, 물자 및 아이디어가 국경을 넘어 자유롭게 왕래하면서 상호 연결성이 증진된 현대사회에서 이러한 가치들은 매우 중요합니다. 금번 전시회에서 오만의 이슬람 문화 속에 내재된 그러한 보편적 가치를 확인할 수 있을 것으로 기대합니다.

마지막으로 양국 국민간 문화교류 및 상호이해 증진을 위한 주한오만대사관 및 알하르씨 대사의 공헌에 감사드립니다.


금번 전시회 개막을 다시 한 번 축하드리고, 초대에 감사드리며 모두들 즐거운 저녁이 되시기를 기원합니다.
